My Dog Has Worms

I just found out that my dog has worms. But I have always heard that dogs’ mouths are cleaner than their humans. This is so not true because a dogs’ mouth can carry around a ton of bad bacteria according to the reference material found at the United States National Library of Medicine.

Now that the vet told me that my dog has worms, what is going to be the best way to treat worms? The first thing we have to find out is what kind of worms is the dog carrying? Are there other dogs in the home? Are there cats in the home as well? So, unless you have ever treated your dog for worms, it’s time for a little education.

Brushing their coat or their tongue won’t do any good. You have to deworm your pets, all of them. You must make sure that any feces left in your yard or emitted anywhere else is picked up in a pet bag and discarded of safely (so no other pet can get in to it).  We’ll get back to this below, further into this post.

But first, let’s speak about bacteria or viruses that our pets can ingest, in any number of ways.

Campylobacter enteritis is a common cause of intestinal infection. These bacteria are also one of the many causes of “traveler’s diarrhea” or “food poisoning”.

Your doctor or healthcare provider should perform a physical exam on you, if food poisoning is suspected in your pet. She may order some tests for you as well.

These tests would include a complete blood count (cbc) with a differential, a stool sample testing for white blood cells, and a stool culture for Campylobacter jejuni.

The symptoms, if infected, will start 2 to 4 days after being exposed to the bacteria. They usually last one week, and may include: cramping abdominal pain, fever, nausea and vomiting, watery diarrhea, that is sometimes bloody.

Salmonella is a type of food poisoning and it comes from food that may be contaminated during food processing or food handling by someone with unwashed hands; those of an infected food handler could be the culprit.

Any young persons, especially little children who have impaired immune systems are the most likely to have severe infections. It is far more common in the summer than the winter. It can also be found in the feces of other pets, especially those with diarrhea.

If you and the family are out in a public area around other folks, picnicking or camping, boating, or just around other people in general, you may opt to keep your dog at home in a safe area so you don’t have to worry about him going poop anywhere or having to make that proclamation “my dog has worms”. I believe it can get a little irritating after a while.

Reptiles, baby chicks, ducklings, and small rodents such as hamsters are particularly likely to be carrying this infection.

Campylobacter jejuni is the kind of organism that can get into your dog’s mouth from eating spoiled foods, or when they have just used their tongue to clean their potty parts. Dog’s love to eat kitty feces, primarily because cats don’t digest food 100% so the dog is attracted to left over cat foods.

Dogs will also get into spoiled foods and eat them if the smell is tempting enough. They love to roll around in spoiled things. I had a dog do this once and he smelled so bad, we couldn’t even get the smell off of him for a month.

My Dog Has Worms; But Then So Does My Other Dog?

Most dogs love to eat kitty poop, which is a very definitive way for them to contract these virile organisms. The thing about all of this is that when a dog kisses (licks), those germs, they can easily move from your best friend on to you or into you via saliva.

And if you do come into contact with any of these yucky organisms, you may also begin to fester up a bad case of diarrhea.

So the next time someone tries to tell you how clean their dog’s mouth is? You must inform them that “it is a fact that a dog’s mouth is very dirty, and just like a human, their dog or any dog for that matter, can pass these ugly unclean organisms on to you easily.

If someone you know happens to say “my dog has worms”, calmly tell them to take their dog home and to not return until they have wormed the dog and the fecal matter doesn’t show any more worms in it.

One flea egg is all that it will take to put the host straight on to your lips, later you lick your lips pulling the flea egg into your mouth and washing it down with saliva the next time you swallow.

What person do you know that doesn’t enjoy receiving affection from their pet dog(s)? I’ve even seen commercials on television where the owner is receiving all kinds of tongue lashings from their dog. This is the fastest and easiest way for a host of one of the worm varieties to set up home in your stomach.  Then they can move freely throughout your body and show up in your foot, or tear duct, or even lodged in your eye lid!worms crawling in a human eye and foot

So putting all of this into perspective, then adding a young child in to the picture as well? They will sit there all day long with a peanut butter and jelly dirty face and let their dog clean away.

Make sure when walking your dog in to the public areas that any owner who attempts to let their pet get acquainted, that you tell them “my dog has worms” even though you have taken preventative care to rid the dog of the parasites. Dogs sniff each other and the nose comes into contact with the rectum in most cases, which is perfect for passing the parasites on.

People might think that the flea eggs will get caught or hung up on the dog’s tongue but this is not so. And they think that by brushing their dog’s tongue, they are able to clean these flea eggs or larvae off.  No, even brushing the dog’s tongue won’t help. Scary stuff when it comes to passing on intestinal parasites to a young child.worms in eyelid

Humans can also become infested from eating raw fish.  I have seen fish that were caught and when they began to clean the fish, the stomachs were full of worms. Imagine parasites interwoven through the meat of a fish?

Please do not kiss your kitty; you never know where there is a flea egg that you could accidentally ingest.

I hated it when I found this out because my dog and I loved to snuggle. Once I found out that my dog has worms, I put an end to this. I’m quite sure that my dog was confused by the mixed messages I was sending to her. But take a look at the following and tell me if you would continue kissing your dog or cat after you found out they were carrying these in their gut and quite possibly in their mouth.

And just an afterthought? My son loves to kiss his kitty. Our cat is a full-grown male but he is still babied as if he were still a kitten.

When cats clean themselves, they are likely to lick their poopy parts which were most likely just used in the previous few minutes or so.handful of parasitic worms

When a cat cleans themselves, they are likely to pick up a flea egg or two.  Cats also groom one another, kind of like a monkey does with another of its kind. When cats lick one another, they are surely passing on flea eggs. These eggs go on to hatch within their belly, turning into those little white worms; the tapeworm.

The worms that normally hatch in your kitty’s belly will look like little pieces of round worms removed from intestineswhite rice that are hanging on around their rectum after using the litter box.

Please; do not kiss your kitty because cats are extremely clean and this means that they do a whole lot of licking in those areas.tape worm from a cat

You’re likely to catch yourself a flea egg or two, and they don’t care what nice warm belly that they hatch in; which means that people can catch worms; roundworm, whipworm, hookworm, and tapeworms as you saw in the picture to the right.

If you have an outdoor cat, (which is no longer a recommended home for a cat), as they walk through the grass, their little legs are a flea magnet for a yard full of fleas.

Remember it doesn’t matter whether you say “my dog has worms, so I’m pretty certain that my cat does too and they are all being wormed at the same time, so you might not want your kitty to come in to our yard”!  Animals don’t differentiate which grass is who’s or what the fence means. Hopefully your neighbors and friends don’t take any of this personally.

It doesn’t matter whose digestive tract the little flea eggs end up in, they still turn into worms. The worms then live, feed, and multiply in the digestive tract. But they obviously hopefully have to be killed at some point.

A different medicine is used for killing the worms in a human than the medication used to kills worms in your kitty or your dog.  Let your doctor treat the worms that you have, and you treat your pet’s worms.

Once medicated, the cat will poop the dead worms out into his litter box and your dog will most likely defecate somewhere outside. It is so important to get that feces out of the kitty box and locked up tight into a fecal bag. Note the number of worms that you may be picking up with the feces; there might be just a few but in the next bowel movement, you might get an army of worms.

The same goes for your dog. Do not leave dog poop lying around for someone else to clean up or to lie about with worm infestation in it. DO NOT! Not only is it bad hygiene, for both humans and animals, it’s just bad, no Terrible, immature, ugly manners.

They may not be dead at the time of defecation, so make sure to keep your dog out of the litter box and don’t let him eat the kitty roca when you go out for a walk either! Dogs love to eat that kitty crap and I’ve heard that this is because there is so much cat food that is not digested that comes out in their poo.  round worms in a pile of dog feces

For some reason, dogs love that crunchy kitty litter stuff. Yuk! Here is a pile of dog poop shortly after defecation, those worms are still very much alive.

I hope I didn’t gross you out too much. Sorry but I hope that my post here can scare people into not smooching with their pets.

And remember, no matter what you might hear elsewhere, brushing the dog’s tongue won’t help. I’ve had to reiterate this fact because I heard that people believed that brushing the dog’s tongue would help and I couldn’t believe that I was hearing such stupidity.

The best preventative medicine for you to use on your pets (and thus you protect yourself), is to use flea repellents and flea larvae killer; you can get all of it here through Amazon, see ad above or click here because they are without a doubt the cheapest I have been able to find.  Pet Products at Amazon

I have compared these very same drops, collars, sprays, and even powders to those at the vet’s office or even the bigger pet stores like PetSmart or PetCo. (I don’t use these stores anymore for a number of different reasons anyway).

Thanks for stopping by to read the latest scoop. If you have any questions or concerns, remarks? Please leave me a note! I love to hear from all of you.

Dogs Are Dying; What About Those Treacherous Bastards?

In Ohio, dogs are dying, causes unknown at this time.

Department of Agriculture is trying to determine whether four dead dogs — three in Cincinnati and one in the Akron-Canton area — had the same illness and whether that illness was caused by a newly detected virus.

The symptoms are vomiting, bloody diarrhea, weight loss, and lethargy.  The Department of Agriculture asks all Ohio vets to watch for these symptoms and to contact the State if they suspect this new illness.

Three dogs died in mid-August in Cincinnati after staying in the same kennel.

Any Owners of animals who have these symptoms should call your vet first, communications director, Erica Hawkins at the Dept of Agriculture, says.

The Dept of Agri says “they feel obligated to make sure that all pet owners are aware that this is happening,” Hawkins said. “Supportive therapies can be helpful if started early enough. But we don’t want people to get too worried.”

A local veterinarian for a dog in the Akron-Canton area, contacted the Agriculture Department to say that she has treated several dogs with similar symptoms that have survived.  Her name is Dr. Melanie Butera.  This came after the news of the three deaths were reported.

A sample of feces was sent to a research lab in California to be tested.  That sample tested positive for canine circovirus; this is a new and isolated virus.

Erica Hawkins said that little is known about this virus.  They are unsure of its origins, including where it came from and how it is spread. This particular virus can cause hemorrhaging and vasculitis; this is an inflammation of the blood vessels.

Dr. Butera told the Dept of Agriculture that the sick dogs she had treated, were both hemorrhaging and had vasculitis.

This information was passed down to me from our online vet, Dr. Andrew Jones.  He has promised to keep us updated as news progresses.  He says that it sounds similar to parvovirus, but there is no vaccine for this.

If your dog has vomiting, bloody diarrhea, then get immediate veterinary care.

Fortunately this virus seems confined to Ohio for now.  But, remember how easily these things spread?  Contagious virus such as parvo or kennel cough and all of the other contracted or contagious illnesses our dogs can get very sick from; possibly die from? If you see any signs of illness, do not wait to get your dog to a vet for care.

Who are you calling “those treacherous bastards”?

AND NOW “those treacherous bastards the Muslims, and those Americans are weak lying sex addicts.  The TV is how I learned about sex and how to build a bear trap,” he says, ” it’s good enough for keeping informed on the world.  I dig Homeland.” he said, obviously wanting to share his opinion of how he perceives the world.

I discovered Philip quite by accident as I was cruising through Twitter. He sounded kind of interesting but more than that he had over 100,000 followers. I wanted to understand why and how a person gets this many followers?  I went to his blog, I copy and pasted a few lines of what I read. He was articulate, educated, had quite a bit to say, but I still didn’t see why he would have this many followers?  BUT the more I read, the more he said.  AND THEN; he gets into “politics and OBAMA” with the following statements:

“President Barack Obama says he has decided that the United States should take military action against Syria in response to a deadly chemical weapons attack.  But he says he will seek congressional authorization for the use of force.”

“He says congressional leadership plans to hold a debate and a vote as soon as Congress comes back in September.” But then the  pres does something that sounds very typical for the pres;

“Obama says he has the authority to act on his own, but believes it is important for the country to have a debate.” and that OUR “Military action would be in response to a chemical weapons attack that the Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government carried out against civilians.”  This is a wonderful thing to hear; another country’s president uses chemical weapons on their own people? At least that is what I understood about what has happened there. “The U.S. says more than 1.400 Syrians were killed in that attack last week.” Great way to treat your own people eh?  Philip A. Ohlund  So let’s get America involved; a typical presidential thought!

Well I was pretty fascinated by Philip’s writing style, as are many, many other people it seems, over 100,000 people. That is a lot of people to have as fans of what you have to say. He talks a lot about world affairs, and gives his opinion, where many seem to agree.
